Terry’s Chocolate Orange Loaf Cake – A moist chocolate loaf cake, packed with chunks of Terry’s Chocolate Orange, and decorated with even more chocolate orange! If you love Terry’s Chocolate Orange, you’re going to love this cake!

After my recent recipe for Terry’s Chocolate Orange Millionaire’s Shortbread I’ve had a craving for all things chocolate orange. I’ve had this cake in my head for a while. I wanted something deeply chocolatey and satisfying, with a good hit of chocolate orange. I wanted it to be something that could be easily thrown together, and that would go well with a morning coffee.

So the recipe I have for you today is a deliciously moist chocolate loaf cake, packed full of chunks of chopped Terry’s Chocolate Orange, topped with chocolate, and finished off with even more segments of Terry’s Chocolate Orange!

I’ve been really generous with my chocolate layer on this layer cake and melted an entire Terry’s Chocolate Orange on top! Now, you might think this is too much chocolate on top of a humble loaf cake, but I love the contrast of the thick chocolate against the crumb of the cake. Never too much chocolate in my opinion!

Do bear in mind though that this doesn’t make it the easiest cake to cut into neat slices as the chocolate will crack and  break as you slice in to it. I quite like the excuse of nibbling away at the chocolate chunks that break off, but if you wanted neat and tidy slices you might want to reduce your chocolate layer a bit.

You could do this by making a thinner layer of chocolate, using half the amount called for in the recipe. Or, if you’re really restrained, a pretty little drizzle of dark chocolate orange would like lovely, too.

For me though, its got to be a thick, indulgent chocolate layer!

Recipe type: Cake
Ingredients
  • 175g stork, or use unsalted butter softened to room temperature
  • 175g caster sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • juice and zest of one orange
  • 210g self raising flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 60g cocoa powder
  • 100ml milk
  • 75g Terry's chocolate orange, chopped into rough chunks
  • 1 chocolate orange melted
  • 75g chocolate orange, to decorate
Method
  1. Preheat the oven to 160C / 140C fan / 320 F, and line a loaf tin with greaseproof baking paper.
  2. Cream together the stork, caster sugar, orange juice and orange zest.
  3. Add in the self raising flour, baking powder, cocoa powder and milk and beat to combine. Stir through the 75g chopped Terry's Chocolate Orange.
  4. Pour the cake into the prepared tin and bake for 45 - 50 minutes until the bake is risen and an inserted skewer comes out clean.
  5. Cool completely in the tin, then turn out onto a wire rack or board to decorate.
  6. Gently melt a Terry's Chocolate Orange either in short bursts in a microwave, or in a heatproof bowl over a pan of gently simmering water. If you are melting the chocolate in the microwave ensure that you keep a close eye on it, and stir it between each 20 - 30 second blast.. Pour the melted chocolate over the cooled loaf cake, allow to set for a few minutes, then decorate with your remaining 75g chocolate orange segments.

  1. I love how deep and chocolatey that cake looks. Also, I don’t think there’s such a thing as too much chocolate on a humble loaf cake 😀
